Heat protection for hair - why it's essential for styling
Whether hairdryer, straightener or curling iron: heat is part of many people's daily styling routine. What is often underestimated: temperatures as low as approx. 150 °C can cause lasting damage to the hair structure.
Targeted heat protection for the hair helps to effectively prevent hair damage, breakage and moisture loss - without compromising styling
A high-quality heat protection spray or a professional heat protection cream not only protects the hair from heat, but also improves the styling result: more suppleness, less frizz, controlled finish.

Heat protection for clear blonde hair
Q&A with Katharina Heidenreich from Research & Development
Heat protection scientifically explained
We receive a lot of questions about heat protection for hair - especially when it comes to blow-drying, straightening irons, curling irons and the right way to use them in everyday life.
We have compiled the most frequently asked questions and passed them on to Katharina from our Research & Development department. She develops products every day that have to work reliably in the demanding everyday salon environment.
In Q&A, she explains why heat protection is important, how it works and what you should look out for when using it.
Yes, absolutely. Heat protection is essential as soon as the hair is regularly exposed to heat - for example with a hairdryer, straightener or curling iron. When heated, moisture in the hair evaporates, the cuticle opens and the hair fiber becomes significantly more susceptible to dryness, breakage and loss of shine.
Products with heat protection wrap around the hair like a protective film, reducing the direct effect of heat and helping to retain the hair's natural moisture. This makes the hair more resistant and nourished in the long term.
If you wash your hair and then style it, this is the right order:
- Wash your hair
- Care for your hair
- Apply heat protection to towel-dried hair
- Dry-dry, using the round brush if necessary
- If necessary, style with a straightening iron or curling iron afterwards
This is exactly how we work in the salon to protect the hair structure as much as possible during styling.
If you feel that the hair has absorbed most of the product during blow-drying, you can apply a small amount of heat protection to dry hair before heat styling with a straightener or curling iron. This refreshes the protection without overloading the hair structure.
If required, the heat protection can also be refreshed in the salon before using the straightener or curling iron.
Correct application is crucial for the protective effect.
What is important:
- Distribute the product evenly in the hair
- prioritize lengths and ends
- Do not overdose - less is more
- First work with a hairdryer or styling tool afterwards
High-quality heat protection - whether spray or cream - protects the hair without weighing it down or leaving visible residue.
Yes - definitely. Blow-drying can also damage the hair structure, especially with regular styling. The rule of thumb is: as soon as heat comes into play, heat protection for the hair is essential.
Yes. High-quality heat protection sprays or creams are also suitable for use on dry hair, for example before straightening or curling. A fine, even distribution is crucial so that the hair is not weighed down.
First the leave-in care, for example a leave-in conditioner such as HYDRO Care Spray, followed by the heat protection. Care products provide the hair with moisture and nutrients. The heat protection is then applied as a protective layer before heat is applied.
This depends on the hair type and the desired styling result.
- easy and finely spreadable
- ideal for fine to normal hair
- very suitable for blow-drying and finishing styles
- intensive, smoothing effect
- ideal for dry, frizzy or strong hair
- offers additional control when styling
