FAQ
Lightening
Lightening shades in the GLYNT SHADOWS line have a lightening power of 4–5 levels, depending on the shade selected. To ensure accurate color results, we recommend using them only starting at level 6.
Here, we’d like to draw your attention to the new color palette map. To help you better navigate the light color range, the chart features three color selectors with the color results “Warm,” “Neutral,” “Cool,” and “Beige,” each at shade levels 6, 7, and 8. This allows for a precise representation of the possible results using the corresponding formula.
Yes, but the result won’t be exactly the same. This could potentially lead to dissatisfaction. A bleaching product has significantly stronger lightening power - GLYNT PLATINUM Blond, for example, can lighten hair by up to 7 shades. If you switch to a different product, you should always provide the client with a detailed consultation beforehand.
We do not recommend this, as we cannot guarantee optimal results in terms of lightening and pigmentation.
GLYNT SHADOWS Lightening products are designed to lighten natural hair. They contain dyes that provide a color direction but no color depth—in other words, no coverage.
No, our GLYNT SHADOWS hair colors are not mixed with GLYNT SHADOWS lightening products because the mixing ratios, processing times, and, as a result, the color results are different.
While a hair color is mixed 1:1 with 6%, 9%, or 12%, SHADOWS lighteners are mixed exclusively 1:2 with 9% or 12%.
In this specific case, two color formulations would need to be used. On the front of the head, a level 9 shade is used to achieve coverage: 2 parts 9.0+, 1 part 9.13, 1:1, 6%.
On the back of the head, we recommend using a lightening formula to achieve the perfect lightening of the natural hair: 1 part 11.80+, 1T 11.60+, 1T 11.00+, 1T 11.10, 1:2, 12%.
Special Tip: Up to a 30% gray coverage, a lightening treatment can be used without hesitation. If the white content is higher (max. 60%), it depends on the client’s desired color whether using a bleaching agent followed by glossing is the better option.
No, pastel colors are only used with “standard shades” up to level 10. When a lighter shade is used, the color’s longevity, gentleness on the hair, and the ability to create specific highlights are significantly compromised.
Sunlight
The ultraviolet rays in sunlight oxidize the hair, thereby bleaching out both the natural color pigments and the artificial dyes.
In addition, saltwater and chlorinated water often cause the hair to swell, which opens the cuticle more widely and increases the hair’s susceptibility to UV rays.
The result: lightening of natural and artificial color pigments, and loss of hair substance. To prevent this, we recommend using our GLYNT SUN Care Spray between swims. It protects the hair from sun exposure and provides plenty of moisture thanks to panthenol.
Especially with delicate hair, salt deposits on the hair can contribute to the loss of the hair’s natural moisture. The hair becomes dry and brittle.
Additional physical processes, such as heat from blow-drying and straightening, should be avoided. To give your hair an extra dose of moisture and nourishment, we recommend GLYNT SUN Mask. Thanks to its protein compounds, it restores the hair’s strength and elasticity.
The GLYNT SUN Scalp Protect Spray, specially developed for the scalp, is ideal for use along the hairline and part. Thanks to its UVA/UVB filter and SPF 15, its light, non-greasy formula makes it perfect for protecting the scalp.
There is no sun protection factor (SPF) for hair. SPF is designed solely to protect the skin from the sun’s rays.
Hair is keratinized protein, so it cannot get sunburned. However, sunlight can damage the lipids in the hair as well as its color pigments. GLYNT Sun products contain UV-protective ingredients to prevent the color pigments from fading. Agave and panthenol in our GLYNT SUN Shampoo help counteract moisture loss.
The direct-acting pigments in GLYNT MANGALA can mask a green cast.
GLYNT MANGALA Beige Blond would be suitable for blonde hair.
The moisturizing treatment has a balancing effect and can be given to clients for preventive care.
In the salon, it is possible to perform a highlight cleansing.
Mixing ratio:
1 part MAGNUM blond + 2 parts warm water
To restore the hair’s structure and improve its durability, especially in heavily damaged hair, a preliminary pre-pigmentation treatment with GLYNT MANGALA could be performed. Subsequently, for lightening of up to 2 shade levels, a color treatment is applied using 1 part natural shade and 1 part fashion shade in a 1:2 mixing ratio with 2% developer.
For darkening by more than 2 shade levels, a Mixton is also used for repigmentation; the selection is based on the basic lightening chart. Tip: It is recommended to use an intensive color treatment, as this offers the gentlest and most long-lasting way to darken faded hair.
Matting in the blonde section
When hair is lightened, pheomelanin often becomes visible, and with light blonde shades, unwanted warm highlights come to the fore. If this warm undertone is to be neutralized by using a complementary color according to the color wheel, the process is called “matting.”
Especially with blonde hair, an unwanted yellow cast often occurs. In this case, it’s important to balance it out with a violet shade. If there’s an orange undertone, blue is the right complementary color. We like to use 9.6 as a pastel color with 3 parts GLYNT Cream Oxyd 2%. It can also be combined with other shades, such as 9.1 or 10.8+. If a golden cast is still present, it’s important to mix in a violet shade to mattify it; otherwise, the gold cannot be neutralized. An ash shade does not mattify gold (0.1).
Pastel Hair Colors (SHADOWS), Glossing (SHADOWS LIQUID COLOR GLOSS), Direct-Application Products (GLYNT ICE BLOND, GLYNT MANGALA)
The longevity of a matte finish depends on the hair’s structure. Bleached hair has an open structure, like a dried pinecone. This can cause the color to fade more quickly. To extend the longevity of the color, gently nourishing products such as the GLYNT REVITAL line can be used. Deep-cleansing or very oily products should not be used.
First, the salon-exclusive GLYNT TRIJUVEN treatment (steps 1 and 2) should be performed, followed by toning using pastel color, glossing, or direct-application products.
Pre- and Repigmentation
In pre-pigmentation, direct-acting, physical dyes are applied before coloring; in re-pigmentation, additional pigments in the form of a mixtone are added to the dye mixture and applied directly to the hair during the coloring process.
Pre-pigmentation is ideal for achieving a particularly rich and vibrant shade, for example, on hair with severe structural damage. This extra step is also well worth the effort to color previously colored or bleached hair a beautifully even and brilliant darker shade. The pigments deposited beforehand help balance the hair’s structure, ensuring the desired, even color result with improved longevity. The number of shades to be darkened does not matter.
If lightened hair is to be colored back to its natural shade or more than two shade levels darker, repigmentation is always recommended. Otherwise, the hair will lack the warm pigments corresponding to the lightening process, and the color result may not only appear too cool but also washed-out and dull. Repigmentation also improves the longevity of the hair color.
Our MANGALA Color Treatments with instant-acting pigments are perfect for pre-pigmentation. The selected MANGALA shade (see table) is applied to washed, towel-dried hair before coloring. After letting it sit for 10 minutes, the excess color treatment can be easily removed from the hair with a towel, and then the color formula is applied immediately without rinsing.
After determining the lightening base for the target shade, select the corresponding Mixton; see the lightening base table: The amount of Mixton is taken from the Mixton table and then added to the color paste. Please note: 1. When darkening more than one shade, care should be taken to mix in half the amount of natural tone. 2. When measuring out the oxidizing agent to be used, the amount of Mixton used is also taken into account
No, GLYNT MANGALA is not suitable for achieving the desired coverage through pre-pigmentation; a visible and sufficient color effect on natural white hair would be virtually nonexistent after application.
We recommend using an intensive tint; it is even gentler on the hair and significantly extends the color's longevity. Example: Starting condition:
Colored, structurally damaged hair | Shade 8.73 | Desired shade: 5.7 Procedure:
1.Pre-pigmentation with MANGALA
10T Espresso, 10T Brunette, 1T Copper Red (see MANGALA Mixing Formulas booklet)
2. Repigmentation
1T5.0/ 1T5.7/0.4 Mixton according to the table. 1:2 2% Energizer
Coverage
GLYNT SHADOWS Natural Shades
3.0+ - 9.0+ (1:1 mixture, 6%),
GLYNT SHADOWS Intense Shades
1.0 (1:1 mixture, 6%),
For optimal coverage, we recommend leaving the product on for at least 40 minutes without heat. Optionally, you can loosely cover the area with clear plastic wrap to generate mild heat.
There are three categories for determining the amount of natural color. If the percentage of white hair is less than 30%, mix 1 part model color with 1 part natural color. If the percentage of white hair is more than 30%, mix 1 part model color with 2 parts natural color. For white hair content of 60% or more and for very coarse hair, it is recommended to add an additional one-third of a darker natural shade: 1T 5.0(+) + 1T 6.0(+) + 1T 6.7(+) 1:1 6%
Hair Bleaching
GLYNT Platinum Blond is a bleaching powder that can lighten hair by up to 7 levels. The results are clear, ultra-light blonde shades. It’s perfect for full-head applications and highlighting techniques.
GLYNT Magnum Blond lightens hair by 5–6 levels. Depending on your preferences and the client’s starting color, you can achieve sandy and very harmonious blonde shades. It’s ideal for balayage effects and other highlights.
Our hair lighteners are mixed in a 1:2 ratio with 3% Ultra Lift Developer at a 1:2 mixing ratio.
The correct mixing ratio is so important because it ensures that the bleaching paste has the best consistency, and only then can optimal results be achieved.
Yes, Thickener Additive gives the bleaching paste a paste-like consistency and acts as an adhesion enhancer. This allows for precise application, such as when using freehand techniques. The mixing ratio is 1 pump of Thickener Additive to 20 grams of bleaching paste.
No. Applying heat causes the pheomelanins to break down unevenly, which can leave a yellow or orange tint in the hair. It can also cause irritation on sensitive scalps. We recommend leaving the product on for up to 60 minutes under supervision. To prevent the product from drying out, a clear plastic wrap may be helpful. It must not fit tightly against the head and should remain open in the center of the top of the head to prevent alkaline buildup.
To achieve an even result, apply the bleach generously when lightening just the roots. When bleaching natural hair all over, first apply the bleaching paste to the mid-lengths and ends, and after 10 minutes, bleach the roots.
Once the desired lightness has been achieved, we recommend rinsing the hair thoroughly with water and washing it once with REVITAL Shampoo. Next, apply the HYDRO Conditioner to the hair to close the raised cuticle and neutralize any remaining alkaline residues. After letting it sit for 2 minutes, rinse out the conditioner and continue with the hair treatment.
SHADOWS Liquid Colour Gloss
Once opened, each shade should be used within 3 months. Please store at a temperature of no more than 25 °C.
Wash your hair once with VOLUME Shampoo. Then comb it thoroughly and section it off. Apply the SHADOWS LIQUID COLOUR GLOSS to towel-dried hair and work it in carefully with your hands.
Yes, all shades can be mixed together—even beyond our mixing formula inspirations.
Yes, that is possible at the appropriate pitch. This requires a precise determination of the starting point.
With the CLEAR TONE, you can reduce the intensity of the highlights—the result is softer and more transparent.
No, this is a semi-permanent hair color. However, it is possible to slightly cover up or enhance gray hair.
No, because it is a gloss. Furthermore, the product line does not include natural shades.
The longevity of the color depends on the hair structure. To extend the color's longevity, we recommend the MANGALA Color Treatment as a Private Formula as a complementary care product.
The colors indicate the pitch that is also shown—that is, the same pitch.
Stains are usually caused by different hair textures or uneven product distribution. It is important to thoroughly work the product into the hair with your fingers, regardless of the application technique.
Yes, depending on the shade and the choice of nuances, even natural hair is slightly enhanced. The rule is: The darker the natural hair, the more subtle the highlights. The hair is not lightened.
The cuticle layer of bleached hair is usually widely open and absorbs color to varying degrees. If you specifically want a visibly darker result, we recommend the GLYNT SHADOWS Intensive tints.
Yes—the longer the processing time, the more dye molecules fully develop, making the result appear more intense and richer.
Hair Color
With GLYNT SHADOWS Intensive tints, you can color your hair tone-on-tone or go darker. They’re also suitable for hair that’s already been lightened or bleached, as they’re very gentle on the hair and therefore offer long-lasting results. GLYNT SHADOWS+ Permanent colours provide permanent color. They can cover up to 100 percent of gray hair, achieve intense color results such as vibrant red tones, and lighten natural hair.
The GLYNT SHADOWS+ mixing shades have three main applications: matting to neutralize unwanted highlights, enhancing highlights to intensify color tones, and for repigmentation. They can be mixed with both SHADOWS+ Permanent colours and SHADOWS Intensive tints. The mixing shades are not used undiluted but are always mixed with a base shade, up to a maximum of one-third.
Depending on the initial condition, different products can be used. MANGALA is used to refresh the highlights. A pastel color treatment with GLYNT SHADOWS/+ provides natural pigmentation while preserving the strand pattern. LIQUID COLOUR GLOSS is ideal for a subtle shimmer and exceptionally intense shine. An intensive color treatment with our GLYNT SHADOWS is used on heavily faded lengths and ends to restore depth of color.
It is recommended to use the SHADOWS PH Transformer when only Shadows+ shades are mixed into a pastel color. This prevents the natural hair from being lightened. The proportion of ammonia decreases , and the pastel color does not have a lightening effect on the natural hair. This does not affect the pigment concentration.
That depends on the desired intensity. The lighter the shade of Liquid used, the lighter the result. Based on the client’s natural hair color and the desired intensity, the stylist must decide which product is best suited. SHADOWS Pastels are not more effective, but they have stronger pigmentation.
